• Rabies: Bats are one of the main carriers of rabies in the United States. Rabies is a serious disease that is caused by a virus and can be transmitted to humans and pets through the bite of infected animals, such as bats. This viral disease affects the nervous system. Once the virus reaches the central nervous system, it causes inflammation and can lead to serious symptoms, including seizures, paralysis, and death. In many cases, the initial symptoms of rabies may be mild and mistaken for another illness, but as the disease progresses, it can become life-threatening.
• Histoplasmosis: Histoplasmosis is a disease that can affect humans and pets. It is caused by inhaling the spores of a fungus. This fungus is commonly found in soil that is contaminated with bat droppings. When bats roost in large numbers, they can produce a significant amount of droppings, which can increase the risk of exposure to the fungus that causes histoplasmosis. Humans can contract histoplasmosis by breathing in the fungal spores, which are often small enough to be inhaled deep into the lungs. The symptoms of this fungal disease can range from mild to severe and can include fever, fatigue, chest pain, cough, and shortness of breath. In severe cases, the disease can cause pneumonia, and can even be fatal if left untreated. Pets, particularly dogs and cats can also become infected with histoplasmosis if they come into contact with bat droppings or soil contaminated with the fungus.

To prevent the spread of illnesses from bats to humans and pets, avoid contact with infected bats. This includes avoiding contact with bats in general, avoiding contact with their droppings, and avoiding consuming food or drinks that may have been contaminated with bat saliva, urine, or feces. 

Another issue with a bat infestation is the damage it can cause to your property. Bats tend to roost in dark, tight spaces such as attics, walls, and chimneys. Over time, their urine and guano can cause significant structural damage, leading to expensive repairs. Bats can also chew through electrical wiring, which can create a fire hazard and make your home unfit to live in and generally unsafe. Additionally, bat infestations can create an unpleasant odor in your home, as the smell of guano and urine can linger long after the bats have gone. This can make your home feel dirty and unpleasant, and can also reduce its overall value. The cost of replacing materials damaged by bats can be significant as well.

Lastly, bats can be a nuisance. Their constant movement, noise, and chirping can keep you and your family up at night, making it difficult to get a good night’s sleep. They may also fly into your home or get trapped, leading to additional stress and discomfort. Once you have bats in your home, it can be difficult to rest easy until the issue has been safely resolved.
